My Journey: The Beginning
About a week and a half ago, I sat up in bed and made a decision. It wasn't what to wear. It wasn't what to have for lunch or even where to go after work. It was to find myself.
There comes a point in our lives when we realize that we are just hiding. We hide behind things in a way that seems to make life a little easier. If we don't have to address the hard to reach places in life, are they really there?
Everyone has their own battles to endure, but for me, I always thought it was weight. The older I get and the more my priorities change, the more I realize that weight is the consequence not the problem.
Ask yourself how long it has been since you "took care of yourself". I'm not talking about brushing your teeth and eating your vegetables. I am talking about "taking care of yourself" in ways that we often discard as the parts of life that are disposable. Things like reading a good book. Having a great conversation. Taking a nap. Going for a walk. Drinking a cup of coffee on your back porch as the sun comes up.
Everyone has a different idea of what their "care" requires, but we just push those demands to the side because a suit that writes our paycheck is more important. We have taken the part of our lives that provides income and worked so hard, sometimes even too hard, to perfect it. The only problem with this? Most of us have left ourselves back on the starting line.
Have you ever looked back and seen that jogger on the street, the woman with the shopping bags or the couple fixing up their yard and wondered to yourself, "wow! Talk about overacheivers! I couldn't even imagine having the time to do any of that." Herein lies the problem.
We do have time. We have to make it. No one can fault you for doing your job well in 40 hours. Of course there will be times when work becomes demanding to the point of a 60 hour workweek, but this shouldn't be the norm.
Nowadays, we get our "you need to do this's" from just about anyone. So I have decided to take my tasks, aka mission to succeed, and keep it as secret as a CIA file. Granted just like a CIA file, there will be some information leakage, but not enough to derail my true mission; to find myself and get healthy in both mind, body and spirit.
Let's get this clear though, I'm not eating pine nuts and doing yoga with monks, I am listening to myself more. I am looking to the future with a positive attitude and actually starting to see myself at the finish line. I will make the to do list for tomorrow and leave early enough to get to work on me.
I'm going to dance in my kitchen. I'm going to search for great recipes to try. I'm going to read a book or watch a movie. I'm going to sweat out my stress at the gym. I'm going to call my best friend. These things may not happen overnight, but they WILL happen.
I have already started this journey. In fact, taking the time to workout and cook rather than drive-thru, get active with my friends and family, have all led to 2.5 lbs of weight loss in the last week and a half and something that I took for granted for a very long time. Happiness.
