Labor Day Weekend...laughter and tears...
This Labor Day weekend proved to be a long weekend for sure. Last week I worked every single day 12+ hours. Saturday was a day of naps then a housewarming party at a friends home. Sunday was a 12+ hour day at the Minnesota State Fair and Monday was a day of cleaning, eating and tears.
It's great how accomplished you can feel just by getting a few loads of laundry done, painting a wall and doing the dishes. That's exactly what Charlie and I did. Then at about 4, Steve and Sarah picked us up and we were off to Grand Casino Mille Lacs. We had free buffet coupons and well, since Monday is Crab Crackin' Monday, the boys were on a mission.
Sadly enough, on the way to the Casino, Charlie received a voicemail from his mother. She said that Uncle Dennis had passed away. I don't see that look on Charlie's face very often, but when I do, I know something has gone terribly wrong.
Dennis was 52 years old and had complained of chest pains that morning. They were walking to the car to head to the hospital and he collapsed at the car. They were unable to bring him back. Dennis and his wonderful wife, Rena, were up at a couples weekend in Brainerd.
It's so sad. Dennis was always so full of life and laughter. The stories I heard! If only we could have put them onto paper! We'd have sold a million copies!
The funeral is this Friday. I may be new to the Conlin Family, but I feel the hurt like I'd known him all my life.
We went to the Casino as planned. The dinner was great and the winning was not. But hey, what do you expect. It's a casino.
